Employment Type: Freelance Duration: Project-based, depending on assignment scope and timeline Location: Remote Reports To: Creative Lead / Project Manager THE ROLE We’re seeking an experienced Freelance Motion Designer & Illustrator to support original motion, animation, and illustration work across brand identities, digital experiences, social campaigns, and performance marketing assets. You’ll bring movement, character and visual depth to creative ideas, helping brands and campaigns communicate in more engaging and memorable ways. Depending on the assignment, you may be engaged specifically for motion design, illustration, or a combination of both. You’ll work from creative briefs, scripts, storyboards or approved visual directions, and may also be required to develop visual concepts or storyboards where appropriate. You should have strong visual craft, sound creative judgement and the ability to manage your work independently from development through to final delivery. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Visual Development Interpret creative briefs, scripts, storyboards and visual references. Develop visual concepts, treatments or storyboards where required. Translate creative direction into compelling visual executions. Contribute ideas that strengthen the concept and visual storytelling. Motion + Animation Create motion design and animation across brand films, campaigns, digital experiences and social content. Apply strong judgement in timing, pacing, composition and visual storytelling. Adapt motion assets across different platforms, formats and campaign requirements. Refine movement, pacing and narrative flow based on feedback. Illustration Develop illustrations, icons, characters and other visual assets across brand and campaign applications. Apply strong principles of composition, colour, form and visual consistency. Maintain consistency across an illustration system or series. Prepare artwork for digital, motion or campaign use. Production + Collaboration Manage assigned work from development through to final delivery. Prepare production-ready files and assets to the required technical specifications. Maintain organised working files and clearly structured project assets. Provide source files and packaged assets for handover where required. Collaborate closely with the Creative Lead, Designers, Copywriters and Project Manager. Communicate progress clearly and flag technical, timeline, or capacity concerns early. Incorporate feedback constructively while maintaining the quality and integrity of the work. SKILLS + COMPETENCIES Technical Skills Strong proficiency in the software and production workflows relevant to your specialisation. Good understanding of digital, social and production formats. Familiar with AI-assisted image, illustration, motion or video workflows. Able to refine AI-generated outputs into original, cohesive and production-ready work. Comfortable adapting creative assets for different platforms, formats and channel requirements. Creative + Craft Strong visual sensibility and attention to craft. Good understanding of composition, colour, hierarchy and visual storytelling. For motion work, a strong sense of timing, pacing, typography and movement. For illustration work, strong drawing and composition fundamentals with the ability to maintain a consistent visual style. Able to interpret creative references and brand guidelines thoughtfully rather than simply replicate them. Able to balance originality with brand, audience, and production requirements. Experience + Background At least 5 years of professional experience in motion design, animation, illustration or a related creative field. Agency, design studio, or production experience preferred. A strong portfolio or showreel demonstrating relevant commercial work across brand, digital or marketing projects. Able to manage project-based assignments independently with minimal supervision.
